Who in the name of all Hell is Anders Behring Breivik?
We know he's a killer of scores of teenagers at a political summer camp.
We know he's a bomber of government buildings in the evil and foul tradition of Timothy McVeigh.
We know he's a plagiarist from the Unibomber.
But who *is* he? What *is* he?
Let's start out by saying what he -- or the foul spirit that inhabits him -- is not.
He is not a Christian.
He is not a Republican.
He is not a conservative.
He is not associated with or working with the "Tea Party" in the United States.
He is not in any way, shape or form associated with any aspect of the conservative right wing in the United States.
But what is he then?
We know him, we know his type. Two generations ago, he was as common as acid rain.
He is the Blond Beast.
Fair, perhaps, in the exterior; blond, blue eyed, charming, attractive to women. Cultured and intelligent. Perhaps even musical. His photos show him to be an almost obscenely good looking man.
The Nazis, who created an entire army of them, called them "uebermenschen." They were given jet black uniforms, firearms, and a license to kill, and entire club to belong to--the Schultzstaffl, the "SS", the monsters who destroyed European Jewry and a whole slew of other innocents besides.
Hundreds of thousands of Anders Breiviks ran rampant through Europe for seven years of hell, killing at will while enjoying high culture in their free time.
I never thought I'd see the day of his reappearance. But here he is, a rebuke to the concept that humanity is purely good.
Anders Behring Breivik is what he is:
A Nazi and a traitor to his nation.
He is nothing new. We just haven't seen his type around for a while--outside of Srebrenica, that is.
Let him be tried for treason against the Norwegian crown and let him face the same penalty of his spiritual forefather.
And as for his claim that he is a Christian, let us use the same language to him that was said of the killer at the Cave of the Patriarchs: Sensible Christianity spits you out. You are not one of us.
May God not forgive you, Anders Breivik, for you surely knew what you were doing.
Let him be consigned to the forgotten, and may his name blacken our consciousness no more.
NOTE: My unconscious must really not like the name of this man, which was misspelled in the first iteration of this post.
